Child Mind Institute presents school-based mental‑health and reading interventions to District 25 parents

Taylor Barkey, director of programs at the Child Mind Institute (CMI), told District 25 parent leaders the institute offers several school- and community-based mental health and literacy programs that can be delivered during the school day or through staff training.
Barkey said CMI’s services include a trauma program for grades 3–12, a behavior program for younger students (K–2, sometimes grade 3) with accompanying classroom management support, a mood regulation program for middle and high school students, and a reading intervention for first- and second-grade students who are behind grade level. Historically group-based (4–6 students per group), CMI also expanded to provide individual counseling this year, Barkey said. The organization provides clinician-led trainings so school staff can continue programs independently and offers ongoing consultation and digital training resources.
Barkey said CMI emphasizes evidence-based modalities and routine measurement; the institute uses pre/post measures to track reductions in symptoms and gains in literacy associated with its programs. She offered to share the slide deck and additional materials with district parent leaders and asked parents to contact Jenny Chang to request follow-up resources or email exchanges.
The presentation included background on CMI’s origins in post–Hurricane Sandy school trauma response in 2012 and a description of its models for clinical care, science/evaluation and education resources available in multiple languages on childmind.org.
