Summary
At the March 26 meeting the facilities committee reported progress on multiple library building projects, a June completion date for Mount Pleasant HVAC/roof work, and an unresolved dispute over a gas pipe relocation at the Southeast Library construction site.
The Board of Library Trustees’ facilities committee reported project updates and issues at the March 26 meeting.
Committee chair Andrew Trueblood described a shift in the facilities master plan approach toward more holistic renovations rather than separating systems renewal from functional refresh. “When even a little refresh ends up being a bigger, oftentimes a bigger or needs to be bigger. And so just recognizing that when we do it, we should just look holistically at all the things that need to happen,” Trueblood said.
Project updates The committee said design work continues for Shaw and Deanwood. Edgewood (Eckington) site selection has narrowed to two sites on opposite sides of Rhode Island Avenue, and the Chevy Chase property is scheduled for a disposition hearing this weekend where library representatives will attend.
Mount Pleasant is undergoing a full HVAC replacement and partial roof replacement and the committee reported a projected completion in June. Jaspreet (staff) confirmed the Mount Pleasant work’s completion month as June.
Southeast Library construction and utility issue Trustees received photographs and updates on the Southeast Library construction project, described as an extensive build. Committee members reported an unresolved matter with Washington Gas: a gas pipe at the Southeast site needs relocation and there is disagreement over who is financially responsible for moving it. The committee said discussions with Washington Gas were ongoing and no resolution had been reached by the March 26 meeting.
Congress Heights / WMATA The committee noted ongoing conversations with WMATA regarding a previously contemplated lease or joint development for Congress Heights. The committee said legal counsel will need to provide an update; no resolution was reported at the meeting.
Ending Trustees asked staff to continue reporting on construction milestones, outstanding utility issues and expected completion dates so the board can weigh resource and schedule implications as capital projects proceed.
