Budget Review Committee approves library operating line items, adds training funds

The Budget Review Committee approved the library—s proposed operating subtotals and revenue adjustments after a brief review of line-item changes and staffing updates.

Committee members said the only substantive change in the submitted library budget was an added training allocation for a new hire and that telephone charges were being centralized into a townwide account. Allison, the interim library director, confirmed routine materials and circulation costs remained consistent with the prior year and that the library—s largest expense line continued to be materials.

The committee discussed a part-time position converted to full time and how that changed salary allocations; Mark noted the personnel change and said the budget was adjusted accordingly. Members asked about a small postage increase; staff said that rise is mainly from interlibrary loans and higher postal rates.

The committee voted to approve the library operations subtotal as presented and approved a related revenue transfer of $6,800 to balance the account. The motions and votes were taken by voice; the record shows an affirmative vote without a formal roll call.

Members also discussed the townwide telephone consolidation: department desk phones are moving to a central utility account, while certain cell or puck-based plans remain in departmental budgets. Allison said communication with the committee and the library director search are ongoing; Cindy, the recently retired director, has stepped away and the search is proceeding toward a selection.

The committee closed the item with a direction to monitor materials and telephone allocations during the next budget cycle and to return any newly identified cost pressures for review before final appropriation.
