The ordinance, designated in the council packet as an amendment to chapter 243-83 of the municipal code, passed the council vote on first reading by a recorded roll call that left the measure approved for a second reading. The administration said the change would include an additional street near the Golden Nugget area and that the city's share of the increase would remain at the current percentage.
Councilwoman Marshall said she opposed the change because she was "reluctant to do anything to deter any way foot traffic," and asked the administration to consider the broader context of tourism and local foot traffic trends. Another council member asked the administration to check private lot rates for parity before the second reading.
Director Finch, responding to a council question, said the increase takes existing kiosks and raises the rates to the new levels and that the Golden Nugget-adjacent street was being added to the metered area.
Council members voted to advance the ordinance on first reading; the council summary recorded the tally as six in the affirmative and two in the negative. The ordinance will return for a second reading and final adoption with any amendments and implementation dates to be set at that time.
