District communications highlight Chugiak choir at Fenway, bond messaging and summer events

MJ, a member of the Anchorage School District communications team, told the board at the April 24 meeting that the district is using social media, an external newsletter and media partnerships to highlight student achievements and community investments.
MJ said the Chugiak High School choir “delivered a powerful and heartfelt...performance at the national anthem at the historic Fenway Park today,” and noted the event drew “a crowd of more than 33,000 fans.” The communications team has posted footage and behind‑the‑scenes material across district YouTube, Facebook and Instagram feeds and is working with media partners to amplify the story.
MJ also reported that the district’s bond election results were certified by the Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday and that the superintendent sent a message thanking voters and explaining the district’s 10‑year plan. The communications team said it will mail a bond summary and continue outreach to explain the difference between bond funds and the operating budget.
Staff reviewed upcoming community events and outreach dates the communications team is promoting: Alaska Children’s Trust “Champion for Kids” event (this evening, 5:30–7 p.m., Megan Room); a multicultural festival at Government Hill Elementary (this weekend, noon–4 p.m.); Covenant House spring “sleep out” (next weekend, May 2–3); Taste of Korea Cultural Festival (May 10); African American scholarship awards (June 7, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.); and a back‑to‑school backpack and school supplies distribution scheduled for Friday, Aug. 1, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. at Baker Middle School.
MJ encouraged board members and partners to share district social feeds to increase the reach of student stories and bond messaging. President Holloman and other members agreed to have district staff follow up on any specific requests for recognition or event support.
