The council on May 1 voted unanimously to postpone action on a proposed resolution that would establish a Climate Smart Communities task force and appoint a climate smart coordinator.
Council members said the draft resolution needed additional detail, including clearer membership roles, term staggering for initial appointees and explicit references to technical assistance partners. Council discussion included a proposed amendment to name Council member Archie as the coordinator; several council members instead asked sponsors to work with the administration to redraft the resolution, add the University technical partner noted in discussion, and return the item at the next meeting.
Supporters described the task force as a community‑based advisory group that does not itself enact law but can make the city eligible for technical assistance and grant funding under the Climate Smart Communities program. Council members asked that the resolution include open‑meeting requirements and minimum membership criteria already used by neighboring municipalities.
The motion to postpone to the next meeting was offered by a council member and seconded; roll call showed five yeas and the item was deferred. Sponsors said they would circulate an edited draft addressing term classes and partner agencies and seek three total sponsors before returning the item for a vote.
No final decision was taken on who would be coordinator; council members indicated a willingness to appoint a coordinator after the revised resolution is circulated and discussed.
