At a Town of Brookhaven work session, staff presented a proposed amendment to the town's sanitation code, Chapter 45, to clarify rules governing unregistered vehicles on private property.
The amendment would allow a single unregistered vehicle to remain on a residential property only if it is "covered by a car cover or behind a fence, or inside a building, like your garage," and the cover must be an opaque fabric car cover rather than a tarp or boards, staff said. “You can't have more than 1,” the staff member added.
Town staff said the change is intended to simplify enforcement. Under the current code, proving storage often requires multiple site visits, which staff said has made enforcement slow and burdensome over the past two decades. The proposed language would add the words “parked, located upon, maintained, or otherwise kept on your premises” to clarify where the rule applies.
No formal vote on the amendment was recorded during the work session. Staff presented the draft amendment and invited questions from board members.
The proposal remains at the staff/policy-review stage; staff said they will return with final draft language and next steps for formal consideration by the Town Board.
