Board approves 'Play It Safe' curriculum; Children's Advocacy Center to deliver training

Lubbock ISD trustees approved the School Health Advisory Council's recommendation to use the Children's Advocacy Center for elementary instruction on child abuse, family violence, dating violence, human trafficking and suicide prevention, a move the district said will reduce costs and supplement counselor capacity.
The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approved the School Health Advisory Council's recommendation to adopt the Children's Advocacy Center of Lubbock's Play It Safe curriculum for instruction related to child abuse, family violence, dating violence, human trafficking and suicide prevention for the 2025–26 school year.
Doctor Rolo described the SHAC recommendation and told trustees the Children's Advocacy Center will provide the training directly to campuses. "The children's advocacy center now has the capacity that they can actually come in and provide the training themselves," Rolo said, noting the counselors will remain involved to support students who may experience trauma as a result of the instruction. He added the change will save the district money and reduce the burden on counselors to be the sole presenters of sensitive material.
Trustees asked about SHAC membership and selection; Rolo said SHAC is composed of community members, parents and medical professionals and is led by Catherine Wells and Paulette Rosnick. The motion to adopt the Play It Safe curriculum passed unanimously, 6 to 0.
District staff said they will coordinate scheduling with campuses and counselors and that the program will begin for the next school year.
