Lubbock ISD trustees opened the meeting by recognizing hundreds of students who qualified for state competitions in career and technical education, fine arts, athletics and academic contests.
Amy Baker, executive director of career and technical education, led recognition of Technology Student Association qualifiers and more than 100 Lubbock High School students who advanced to the state level in SkillsUSA. The board also recognized state qualifiers from the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center in computer programming, electrical, HVAC and automotive categories; many student names and coaches were read aloud and groups gathered for photographs.
Cesar De Leon, executive director of fine arts, announced two student artworks selected for the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) Youth Art Month exhibition in Austin and listed Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) state qualifiers from Coronado, Estacado, Lubbock High, Monterey and other campuses. Robin Fulbright, executive director of teaching and learning, and other staff recognized 20 students who advanced in Texas History Day state competition.
Athletics recognitions included 20 Lubbock ISD swimmers and divers who qualified for the 2025 Texas swimming and diving state championships (results cited for events and placings), 12 wrestlers who qualified for the state wrestling championships and the Monterey High School Lady Plainsman girls basketball team, crowned the 2025 Class 5A Division II state champions with a March 1, 2025, championship game score cited in the presentation. The board recognized senior guard Leah Chavez for being selected to the 2025 McDonald’s All American Game and for her reported career scoring total cited at the meeting.
