Board approves DuPree Academy turnaround plan after principal outlines context

Carolyn Thompson Conrad, principal of DuPree Academy, told trustees the plan responds to federal requirements for campuses identified for comprehensive support. "The turnaround plan, it's a federal mandate," Conrad said, explaining DuPree's designation follows two consecutive years of unacceptable outcomes under state criteria for alternative education programs. She described DuPree as a credit-recovery and dropout-prevention campus and said many students enter DuPree late in their high-school careers; accordingly, state and federal metrics do not fully capture the campus's graduation work. "When a student is successful, a family is successful, and when a family is successful, community is successful," Conrad added.
Superintendent Doctor Rolo and trustees praised the campus's work. Trustee remarks stressed the difference between state metrics and the campus's mission to support at-risk students and highlighted the district's desire that state measurement tools better reflect outcomes for alternative-education sites.
Trustees moved and seconded approval of the turnaround plan; the motion carried 6 to 0.
The board recorded the approval as a required step under federal turnaround policy; district leaders said they will continue to monitor outcomes and support the campus with district resources.
