Lubbock Independent School District trustees voted unanimously to hire a new chief of police and a new director of human resources following the board's executive closed session.
The board approved the appointment of Eric de Hedinha as Lubbock ISD chief of police and later approved the hiring of Kevin Bu as the district's director of human resources. Both motions carried 6 to 0.
The hires were announced after the board reconvened from closed session. A trustee moved to hire Eric de Hedinha and a second was recorded; the board president then announced the motion carried 6 to 0. After the vote, de Hedinha thanked the board and said he was grateful for the opportunity and looked forward to serving: "I would like to thank you, doctor Rolo, for your confidence in me. I would like to thank the board for their confidence in me. I'm truly grateful for this opportunity." He introduced family members who attended the meeting.
Later in the meeting a trustee moved to hire Kevin Bu for the director of human resources position; the motion also carried 6 to 0. After the vote Bu addressed trustees and said he had spent almost three decades in the district and described his experience across elementary, middle and high school roles.
Both appointments followed an executive closed session; the board referenced Texas Government Code chapter 551 when adjourning to closed session earlier in the meeting. No additional conditions or staggered effective dates for either hire were announced at the public meeting.
Trustees did not place further deliberation about either hire on the public record beyond the motions and votes recorded in open session. The new chief and HR director each spoke briefly to thank trustees and to note their readiness to begin their duties.
The board moved on to other agenda items after the announcements.
