Trustees at a Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD work-study session reviewed draft objectives under two strategic priorities drawn from the district's Vision 2030 plan: optimizing community engagement and optimizing social and emotional health for students.
Board members and staff discussed whether several draft objectives are measurable and how the district should track progress. One objective under community engagement—"create districtwide consistency regarding rules, policies involving family, parent and volunteer engagement"—generated debate over measurable indicators. Trustees suggested potential metrics including PTA membership counts, volunteer registrations, number of community-sponsored events and donations, and program-level partnerships or mentoring relationships. Several trustees said consistent district guidance on volunteer access, lunch visitors and campus-level practices is needed post-COVID.
On social and emotional learning (SEL), trustees supported professional learning for staff on SEL and discussed the difference between training completion and classroom implementation. Staff said measuring implementation could draw on discipline referral data, counselor lesson logs, advisory or SEL lesson schedules and periodic progress checks; trustees cautioned against adding burdensome paperwork for teachers and urged district-aligned measurement tools.
The board directed the governance subcommittee and administration to collect suggested metrics and to return with recommended language and data sources. Trustees said the administration will review objectives, identify existing data collections that can serve as baseline measures and prepare draft measurable objectives and reporting intervals for board review before final adoption.
