Yonkers OKs $712,500 NYSERDA grant for EV charging; council says locations not yet finalized

The Yonkers City Council voted 7-0 on Jan. 28, 2025 to accept $712,500 in grant funds from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to be added to the city’s 2024–25 grant budget.
Council discussion focused on where the grant-funded charging stations would be installed. Councilman Marante asked whether locations were specified in the grant application, saying, “Where do we know a location where these, charges are gonna go?”
City staff member Matt Galligan responded that specific sites were not yet chosen and that planning and engineering must determine locations that comply with grant criteria. Galligan said the funds were intended to support public charging infrastructure and noted that “there are criteria that need to be met as far as complying with the grants.”
Minority Leader Breen raised a related concern about electricity costs, telling colleagues, “I hope by the time they install this that people can afford to charge their cars because the price of electricity is going up and up and up.”
Council President Collins Bellamy then closed discussion and the deputy clerk recorded a roll call vote of 7-0 in favor of accepting the funds. The council directed planning and engineering staff to identify compliant locations and report back so installation can proceed in compliance with NYSERDA requirements.
No precise installation schedule or site list was provided during the meeting; council members said those details will be developed during the planning phase.
