Council adopts public-space naming policy ordinance

The City Council adopted Ordinance 2025-7, amending Chapter 98 to establish a public-space naming policy to guide naming and renaming of city-owned facilities, parks and other public spaces.
Councilwoman Arndt briefed members on the ordinance, saying it creates a process and procedures to guide decisions on naming or renaming public spaces. Council members discussed whether the policy would apply to new buildings as well as renaming existing spaces; Arndt clarified the policy covers naming and renaming of public spaces and buildings but that street naming follows a separate policy.
Councilman Neal moved for adoption; Dr. Pillsbury seconded. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote with all seven members voting in favor. The ordinance passed 7-0.
The new policy will be posted with city procedures and used by staff and the council when naming or renaming parks, city buildings and other publicly owned spaces.
