At its April meeting the Poughkeepsie Arts Commission received updates on marketing, deferred an arts-policy discussion, reviewed a 2024 Chamber photography project and an art-map update, and outlined plans for a Juneteenth arts-and-education walk.
Commissioner Abigail Sarah reported that the commission has re-evaluated its Instagram, social media and website presence and will increase activity and update templates, an events guide and a city art map. Sarah said the goal is to publicize city arts events and the work of City of Poughkeepsie artists even when the commission cannot provide financial support.
Arts policy lead Art Jones was absent; the commission tabled the arts policy discussion until the next meeting. Carrie Decker briefed the group on a tentative Chamber Photography Project that would curate roughly a dozen photographs representing Poughkeepsie history and contemporary life for display in the city chambers; the commission will select a theme, pursue archival resources and seek an artist to curate the display.
Commissioners also discussed plans to update an existing art map of Poughkeepsie, with the aim of creating an interactive map with QR codes that highlights galleries, public art and arts venues. The commission invited public submissions for new locations to include on the updated map.
The commission described a Juneteenth arts-and-education walk planned for the week of June 14 through June 21; the city-led event will feature local artists, vendors and educational components and will be located near Warriss Park along the river; the Arts Commission said it will issue a call for artists for tabling, visual art, sculptures and live painting.
Administrative items: the commission moved to accept the minutes from the March meeting; the motion was seconded and approved by vote. Commissioners then moved to adjourn and the motion carried.
The commission said it expects to fill two vacant commissioner seats — one commission seat and one Common Council seat — within the next 30 to 60 days and asked members of the public to invite artists and projects to future meetings.
No binding funding commitments or policy adoptions were recorded at the meeting.
