Council committee weighs creating a city poet laureate; staff to draft legislation

A government-operations committee discussed a proposal to create a Schenectady city poet laureate position and asked staff to draft formal legislation for further council consideration.

Councilmember Williams introduced the item and invited feedback from academic and arts partners. Discussion focused on candidate qualifications (whether the position should require a body of published books versus recognition for spoken-word performance), residency requirements and whether the city should fund an honorarium. Several council members and speakers advocated for an inclusive definition of "published" to avoid excluding spoken-word artists and poets who may have nontraditional publication histories. Others emphasized the stature of the role and said a substantial body of published work should be among the qualifications; some suggested the nominating committee would refine the criteria.

Councilmembers also discussed funding. One member noted stipend amounts used in other cities, citing examples ranging from about $3,000 to $5,000 found in publicly available postings; another suggested outside partners could contribute funding, and committee members described planning to assess impact before building an honorarium into the city budget.

Next steps: staff said they will draft a legislative ordinance and investigate civil-service requirements and whether the role should be a non‑paid commission position or include compensation. The committee did not take a vote to create the position at this meeting; it directed staff to return a draft ordinance for future consideration.
