Council committee delays SUN appointment to Police Community Review Board

The city’s government operations committee on Feb. 18 agreed to delay consideration of a Skeletka United Neighborhood (SUN) nomination to the Police Community Review Board (CPRB) until SUN leadership finalizes whether the neighborhood organization remains active.

Committee members said they had received a resume supporting the nominee but also an email indicating SUN was disbanding or deactivating temporarily. "The emails said that they're disbanding it and deactivating it for now," one council member said, noting the organization might not meet until it can recruit enough members. That communication was forwarded to the council president.

Council members said the CPRB nomination process is governed by city code requirements that call for nominations to come from standing neighborhood organizations. Because SUN’s status appeared uncertain, several members asked staff to wait until the SUN president returns from vacation and can clarify the organization’s plans.

"If they're going to deactivate, because they're on it's in the code that they are part of them, ... we would have to" change the process, a council member said, urging the committee to wait for SUN’s final decision. Another member said they have been in contact with the CPRB chair and that the CPRB planned to meet in March and had suggested changes.

No formal vote was taken on the appointment; the committee decided to hold the item and revisit it after the SUN president and CPRB chair provide additional information.

The committee also discussed how a change to SUN’s standing status could alter the city code's nomination process and noted any code change would be a separate legislative step.
