DOT announces bike-month events; DOB reports trucking safety actions after drop in construction injuries

DOT-listed May events included helmet giveaways at Croshhorn Park (May 10) and Juniper Park (May 17), and bike-light distributions and delivery worker outreach events on May 28.
Sam, speaking for the Department of Buildings, summarized recent safety outreach tied to Nationwide OSHA Safety Week and a local Trucking Safety Week. DOB said it has documented a 43 percent drop in construction-related injuries since the prior Safety Week and described steps the agency is taking: site-safety cards showing workers have required training, new licensing or oversight for hoisting machines and construction superintendents, proactive enforcement targeted by statistical analysis, and expanded use of digital logs and inspections.
DOB also referenced a recent investigation into a parking-garage collapse that resulted in one fatality, noting careful inspection and oversight of aging garages remains a priority. "We required workers to have on the person what's called site safety cards and showing that they have at least 40 hours training," the DOB speaker said.
Both agencies gave contact information and dates for public events and outreach; DOT encouraged submission of questions before the APS town hall (aps@dot.nyc.gov), and DOB described broader worker outreach and enforcement initiatives.
