Committee expands peer navigator roles for crisis intervention unit; agreements to define duties

The Public Safety Committee approved an agreement to expand peer navigator services for the city’s crisis intervention unit and related community response teams.
City staff told council the administration will partner with the Mental Health Association (MHA) to define how peers will be used on the Crisis Intervention Team, community support team and homicide response team. Staff said this agreement is intended to use MHA expertise to build an effective role description and deployment model. “We have ideas of how the peers should be used, but to really work with an expert to tell us how it makes sense,” a staff member said.
Committee members asked operational questions. Staff said the expansion will add one full‑time and one part‑time peer navigator. Council members asked whether peers would be city employees or employed by MHA; staff said those employment arrangements and operational details will be defined in the agreement and subsequent implementation documents.
The committee approved the agreement (Intro 177) and asked staff to return with additional role and hiring information.
