The People, Parks and Public Works Committee authorized agreements for a compost pilot program and heard that the city plans to expand to the Northeast quadrant following successful pilots.
Commissioner (sanitation) explained that after the pilot, expansion is planned for the Northeast quadrant and that eventual coverage aims to reach all four quadrants. Staff said they are developing an organics management plan; a draft is in progress and staff expect to complete it in the fourth quarter of the upcoming fiscal year. Council members praised the program’s popularity and noted that continued investment may be required to scale operations beyond pilot status.
Council members also asked about diversion metrics and program scale; staff said they would provide data in follow-up. The committee approved the authorization for compost pilot services and related agreements.
