Council approves changes to Dewey Driving Park grant program to free funds for Maplewood Books facade work

The Bridal Resolution Review Committee voted to pass a resolution modifying the Target Commercial Exterior Improvement Grant Program for the Dewey Driving Park Urban Renewal District to allow greater flexibility in how the district’s exterior-improvement funds are used.
Council member Monroe thanked the administration and said the hope is to rehabilitate the former Maplewood Books building and to preserve its historic facade as a gateway between Maplewood and the Edgerton neighborhood. The legislation removes the per-applicant cap that previously limited awards and allows a single applicant to expend a larger portion — or all — of the district funding if selected.
In response to a council request for broad outreach, the administration said it prepared a certified letter that will be sent to all property owners and business owners in the district to notify them of the funding change and to invite applications or expressions of interest. Staff indicated they expect to use a significant amount of the funding on the former Maplewood Books property because prior limitations had capped exterior grants at $30,000, which was insufficient for the building’s needs.
Council members moved and seconded the resolution; the committee voted to pass it. The administration will proceed with certified notifications and said it will work to ensure all business and property owners are aware of the opportunity.
