Resident Frank Lum raised safety concerns about the segment of Highway 60 eastbound approaching State Road 27 near the Mid Florida Credit Union, telling commissioners the area includes an S-curve and blind exits that make left turns hazardous given what he described as high travel speeds.
Lum said the credit union will close its east entrance during construction and direct customers to a different turning movement. He provided a flyer to the mayor and a photocopy of a map and said the realignment of the turn lane could force left-turning drivers to slide in the eastbound lane before completing the turn. He warned that, in his view, the geometry combined with high speeds “is not a good situation” and could produce collisions.
Commissioners noted the road is a state facility and may be under state or county jurisdiction, but Deputy Mayor Curtis Gibson and other commissioners said they would explore traffic-calming or police assistance during the construction period. The chief of police was noted as taking the matter under advisement in the meeting.
