During the public-comment portion of the meeting two residents raised local transportation and land-use concerns and asked the commission for clearer public information.
Frank Lum, a resident, spoke about a proposed turnpike alignment that he and neighbors say has evolved since earlier proposals. Lum asked the city to maintain a web page or a dedicated tab that links to Florida Department of Transportation materials and any city updates so property owners can track potential right-of-way impacts. He said an alternate alignment running along the Highway 27 corridor — an idea mentioned earlier by the deputy mayor — would avoid tearing through nature preserves and neighborhoods.
Resident Becky Weinkoop urged the commission to adopt planning language to preserve the Scenic Highway viewshed inside the city limits, arguing the master plan intended to avoid walled-in development that undermines a scenic corridor. Weinkoop also described repeated traffic and parking congestion at school drop-off and pick-up times on Seminole and Fourth streets, saying cars now park on both sides of the street and that she has reported littering and unsafe conditions to the school with limited follow-up. She asked the city to restore or replace signage that previously limited vehicle access and to consider how school car-rider routing was approved in relation to neighborhood impacts.
Commission discussion and staff response
Commissioners and city staff indicated willingness to provide public information when available. Commissioner Williams noted the city’s “news flash” section on the website and the city manager said the administration will post DOT-related updates in that space when staff have verified information to share. The meeting record shows no formal direction beyond the commission members’ agreement to make information available when it becomes available.
No formal action was taken at the meeting on the turnpike alignment, Scenic Highway inventory or school traffic; the items were recorded as public comment and will remain subject to any future agenda items the commission may schedule.
