Lake Wales commission adopts pension updates, solid-waste franchise and railroad crossing agreement; appoints Board of Adjustment member

Ordinances and resolution
- Ordinance 2024-43 (firefighters pension): The commission adopted an amendment to Chapter 16, Article 3 of the Lake Wales Code to update the firefighters’ pension plan to provide compliance with the SECURE 2 Act. The item passed on second reading by unanimous roll-call vote.
- Ordinance 2024-44 (police pension): The commission adopted parallel amendments to the municipal police officers pension plan (Chapter 16, Article 4) to provide compliance with the SECURE 2 Act. The measure passed on second reading by unanimous roll-call vote.
- Ordinance 2025-01 (solid-waste franchise): The commission adopted an ordinance granting a franchise for solid-waste collection, recycling and disposal services within the city, including findings, terms and rates; the ordinance repeals prior ordinances 2011-09, 2018-02 and 2024-21. The item passed on second reading by unanimous roll call.
- Resolution 2025-02 (railroad crossing devices): The commission adopted a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement among the City of Lake Wales, the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Midland Railroad for reimbursement and the installation and maintenance of grade-crossing traffic-control devices on East Johnson Avenue (financial project number 451355-1-57-01; crossing number 625483). The resolution passed by roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
Appointment
- Board of Adjustment and Appeals: Alfred J. Cooney Jr. was appointed to the Board of Adjustment and Appeals. The commission took the appointment by voice vote (ayes recorded); the motion was made and seconded and the chair announced, “Very good. Congratulations, sir.”
Context
