City officials discussed the Central Polk Parkway East study area and expressed broad concern about several proposed alignments that would cross or abut major local developments and scenic/historic areas.
City Manager James said staff will schedule a meeting with the Turnpike Enterprise and asked commissioners for a clear position. He described the study maps and said none of the alignments are final; staff requested direction on whether to seek alternatives that minimize disruption to existing and planned developments.
Deputy Mayor Gibson stated, “I am in support of Lake Wales Envisioned,” and urged routes that concentrate development and preserve surrounding countryside. Gibson suggested elevated roadway options that follow existing corridors to reduce land take and to protect view sheds and historic resources.
Commissioners identified specific concerns: several alignment options cross the BTI Partners (formerly Winter Haven Corporation) Lake Wales Commons area and, in other options, approach Mountain Lake and Bok Tower Gardens, which would affect scenic view sheds. Commissioners repeatedly asked staff to pursue a formal resolution at the next commission meeting that would oppose the set of alignments presented and ask the Turnpike Enterprise to consider less-impactful alternatives. Several commissioners also recommended a public meeting so residents can review alternatives and the city can document community concerns before final alignments are advanced.
City staff said they recently met with Turnpike Enterprise staff and are working to schedule a follow-up session. Commissioners agreed a resolution opposing the proposed alignments and requesting a re-evaluation of alternatives should be prepared for the next Tuesday meeting. No final decision from the Turnpike Enterprise was presented; commissioners framed the expected city action as advocacy and public comment to the state agency.
