CRA board approves addendum for Smokin' DJ’s restaurant incentive after work shifted to larger units

The City of Lake Wales Community Redevelopment Agency board approved a third addendum to the restaurant food-related incentive for Smokin' DJ’s Burgers and Q, changing the unit numbers in the original agreement to match the space where construction occurred.
Dean Drumgo, assistant city manager, told the board the now-defunct restaurant incentive program offered up to $50,000 in dollar-for-dollar matching funds to offset eligible leasehold improvements in the CRA. He said the CRA originally approved the Smokin' DJ's request on Aug. 9, 2022, and the business has received two previous extensions.
Drumgo said the original agreement referenced Unit 4, but the owners expanded and performed work in Units 5 and 6. “No funds at this moment have been withdrawn from the initial request for this grant,” Drumgo said. He asked the board to approve an addendum that updates the contract to reflect work in Units 5 and 6 and to align paperwork with actual building occupancy.
Jennifer Leeks, who identified herself in the meeting as a business owner involved with the project, told the board the work on Units 5 and 6 was nearly complete and that the business expected to finish punch-list items before early February. “We’ll be done probably before February 1,” Leeks said.
After staff confirmed the addendum corrects unit references only and does not change program eligibility or award amount, the board moved, seconded and approved the addendum by voice vote.
