County to mail property tax relief checks after expanded pilot program

Johnson County officials told the Board of County Commissioners on May 15 that checks will be mailed this summer under the county’s senior and disabled veteran property tax relief pilot program after the board expanded eligibility and increased the county portion covered.
Postoak Ferguson, Johnson County manager, reported that the Treasury, Taxation and Vehicles department recorded 358 approved applicants who will receive a total of $184,309 in tax relief payments. "The change that you made covers the amount up to the county's portion of their real estate tax bill," Postoak Ferguson said, noting a 73% increase in eligible applicants and a 347% increase in relief dollars compared with the prior year.
Commissioners discussed returning to the item during the budget process for further review. Commissioner Hanslick praised the program’s expansion and outreach; Commissioner Myers asked whether the item could be scheduled for additional board discussion at the end of the year to address residents who may still fall through eligibility gaps.
County staff said they plan a third year of the pilot unless the board directs otherwise during the budget process. The manager’s office and the Treasury, Taxation and Vehicles division will coordinate mailing and communications with eligible residents; staff also acknowledged support from the county’s communications and TTV teams in expanding enrollment.
The board did not adopt new legislation during the meeting; the briefing served as a management report and an update to the public and commissioners.
