Henrico teacher urges clearer contract language on "other duties as assigned," calls for bargaining

Lauren Galloway, an elementary school teacher in the Tuckahoe District who said she also resides in the 3 Top District, told the board on March 27 that the contract provision "other duties as assigned" is being applied in exploitative ways.
She listed routine examples: being asked to split or cover classes without compensation, attending IEP and 504 meetings during planning and lunch, supervising lunch because monitors are unavailable, signing up for committees, and spending planning time in what she called “micromanaged performative data meetings.”
Why it matters: Contract language that is broad can produce inconsistent expectations across schools. Teachers said the addendum drafted by county leadership to clarify duties remains “too vague” and urged the board to involve teachers directly.
Galloway said the division needs clearer, explicit language and a seat at the table for staff: “Teachers, IAs, and other school staff need a seat at the table. The language needs to be explicit,” she said. She also called for collective bargaining: “Henrico County schools need collective bargaining, and it is time for the school board to take real action.”
