Henrico district proposes staggered start in 2026–27 calendar after staff, student feedback

Henrico County Public Schools staff returned Thursday with a proposed 2026–27 school calendar that includes a staggered start for pre-K, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades, earlier professional learning days and an added full in-person clerical day between semesters.
The calendar committee developed the proposal after an iterative process beginning last fall that included advisory committees, teacher and student advisory feedback and an online community survey. In the presentation, the presenter said the feedback “highlighted the need for more clerical time in the calendar and the benefits of a staggered start,” and noted growing community support for the model.
Board members praised the committee’s process and said the calendar responded to staff and family needs. Miss Kinsella said she appreciated the responsiveness to staff feedback. Mister Irving said he supported inclusion of class-size considerations in implementation and requested that an explicit commitment to lowering class size via staffing allotments be considered for inclusion in implementation steps. Several members said they had no further questions and looked forward to final approval at the next meeting.
The full proposed calendar was made available in board documents for review; the superintendent noted the item would be presented for approval at the board’s upcoming meeting.
