Fargo South sophomore urges board not to cut high school hockey program

Jonathan Whitehill, a sophomore at Fargo South High School, told the board during public comment he wanted the board to preserve high school hockey and not remove the program.
“My name is Jonathan Whitehill. Go to Fargo Public Schools. I am a sophomore of Fargo South High School and play hockey for the Fargo South,” he said. He described playing hockey since age 5, trying out for Fargo South, and the joy he felt after making the team. Jonathan mentioned coaches Matt Hanson, Warren Mack, Jake Skartreud, Alan Spriggs and Jay Erickson by name and said the program helped him and teammates improve on and off the ice.
Jonathan asked the board to “stop trying to take away a game that not just me, but my Bruins teammates love so much.” He called the program “one of the coolest and most special moments of my life” and closed, “Go Bruins.”
The board heard the public comment during the recognition-of-the-audience segment; the board did not take action on the topic during the meeting.
