Pulaski County school board approves disciplinary placements, referrals for two students

Pulaski County Public Schools’ board on March 25 accepted administrator recommendations to place two students under supervised alternative programs and to refer one student for community behavioral-health services.
The actions were presented by Mr. Graham, a school staff member, who told the board: “I would like to recommend to the school board that student number 8605406, be referred for eligibility for New River Valley Community Services support. We'll spend the rest of the year in RAP, has to go to summer school, meet with a guidance counselor once a week, and if there's a next incident, that student will be expelled from school for 365.”
Board members then moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by roll call. Miss Porter, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Williams, Miss Payne, Miss Cox and Mr. Price all recorded “yes.” The motion carried; the board did not disclose the student’s name because the matter involved a current student and was discussed following a closed-session matter.
The board took a second, related action after Mr. Graham recommended separate placement for student number 8604723. Mr. Graham asked the board to “move [student number 8604723] to night school for the remainder of the school year, continue with New River Valley Community Service support, and then also schedule a re-entry meeting with the administration to talk about next year, the 25-26 school year.” The board moved, seconded and again approved the recommendation by roll call with the same members voting yes.
Both actions combine disciplinary placement with referrals to New River Valley Community Services and conditions intended to support the students’ return to traditional programming: required summer school or continued night-school attendance, weekly meetings with a guidance counselor, and a formal re-entry planning meeting for the next school year. For the first student, administrators told the board that a future incident would result in a 365-day expulsion.
The board did not specify additional corrective steps, appeals processes or specific dates for the re-entry meetings during the public record of the meeting. Because these items followed a closed-session personnel or student-discipline discussion, the board limited public detail to the administrators’ formal recommendations and the board’s recorded votes.
The two votes occurred in sequence on the March 25 special-called meeting agenda and were recorded by roll call as unanimous among voting board members.
