Compton elected chair as school board reorganizes; Perkins named vice chair, Brickway sworn as clerk

Cynthia Compton was elected chair of the Russell County School Board and Christy Perkins was chosen vice chair as the board completed its annual reorganization. The board also appointed Robin Brickway as scribe/board clerk, continued its school board attorney, sustained Robert’s Rules as its parliamentary authority and set its regular meeting schedule.

The board followed its adopted practice of holding reorganization in January. Members nominated candidates for chair and conducted the selection by raised-hand vote; Compton prevailed over a nomination for Bob Gibson. The board then opened nominations for vice chair and selected Perkins.

The board reappointed the school board attorney (motion approved), agreed to continue using Robert’s Rules for its meetings and confirmed a meeting cadence of the first Tuesday of the month with an executive session beginning at 5 p.m. and open session thereafter at 6:30 p.m., unless otherwise advertised.

Committee and liaison assignments were also made. Mr. Eaton volunteered to serve as liaison to the Russell County Board of Supervisors. The inspector’s committee, budget committee and disciplinary committee received membership assignments; the board named Mr. Eaton and Mr. Ball to the budget committee and designated Mr. Parsons as an alternate when needed. The board agreed that two members would serve on the inspector’s committee and on the disciplinary committee.

At the same meeting the board recognized Priscilla Hall of Caswell Elementary as Teacher of the Month. Georgia McCoy, who presented the nomination, said, “Priscilla goes above and beyond for her students every day.” Principal Adam Pageant and other staff joined the recognition.

Ending: The board scheduled its next regular meeting for February 2025 and closed the reorganization items.
