Russell County School Board recognizes student state champions, academic team and employees of the month

The Russell County School Board used part of its regular meeting to recognize students, coaches and staff for state-level athletic and academic achievements and to present monthly staff awards.

Presenters and coaches recognized athletes from Honaker High School, Castlewood High School, and other district schools for recent Virginia High School League (VHSL) and state competition results. Honaker players included Avery Music, named to the VHSL Class 1 first-team All-State as a wide receiver after a season that included more than 1,300 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns, and Hunter Dye, the VHSL Class 1 state wrestling champion at 113 pounds. Castlewood students were recognized for state wrestling placings and indoor track state qualifications. The district's academic team at Castlewood won the region and then advanced through super-regionals to win the state academic championship; coach remarks credited students' persistence and practice schedule.

The board also named Cindy Crabtree, a third-grade teacher at Belfast Elementary School, as teacher of the month; the nomination cited her work to engage students, meet individual needs and collaborate with team members on academic challenges. Tony Dodson of London Middle School was named support staff employee of the month; colleagues described him as an early-arriving, dependable custodian whose work keeps the building operating.

Coaches and presenters repeatedly noted the students' work ethic, preparation and family support. In presenting Avery Music, a coach said, "He's an outstanding young man that represents Honaker High School with high class and dedication," and added that Music helped the team to a district championship. On the academic team state title, coach Britney Hill described the season's progression, Super Regionals performance and the students' resilience at the state matches.
