The New Kent County School Board voted May 5 to approve a new course offering that combines classroom leadership instruction with an internship component tied to the athletics department.
Mr. Miller presented the course, which will be housed in the physical education department and offered at two levels (Leadership 1 and Leadership 2) for juniors and seniors. The classroom portion covers leadership theory and skills; the internship portion places students in supervised roles supporting athletic operations including equipment and field maintenance to practice leadership skills.
There are no prerequisites; staff said interest was identified after a staff member who had taught a similar course in another district vouched for its effectiveness and the district surveyed potential student interest. The board approved the course on the consent of the action items presented that evening.
