School board adopts military family resolution, outlines Purple Star supports and liaison program

The New Kent County School Board unanimously approved a resolution on May 5 affirming the district's commitment to military-connected students and outlining supports tied to the state's Purple Star recognition.
Mr. Miller told the board the division currently has a military liaison at the division level (a school social worker) and identified liaisons at the middle and high schools who have completed training and will help implement peer-to-peer mentoring for new military-connected students. "We have a military liaison currently identified at the division level. Pam Wilkes is one of our school social workers," the presenter said.
Staff said they plan to expand elementary supports by re-identifying and training elementary liaisons before next school year. The peer-mentor model will match incoming military-connected students with trained student mentors who can help with school routines and social introductions.
The resolution passed by unanimous vote. Board members commended staff for the work and asked for ongoing updates as liaison and mentoring programs launch in the coming weeks.
