District review finds aging vehicle fleet and rising maintenance and fuel costs

Page County School Division officials told the school board on Feb. 13 that the district is conducting a fleet review after identifying an aging vehicle inventory and rising operating costs.
Doctor Johnson said the division’s vehicle inventory stands at 113 units, including buses, maintenance trucks, vans and cars. He said 39 of the vehicles are daily-use cars, vans and trucks for maintenance and that some transport vehicles have very high mileage: 15 cars and vans have more than 150,000 miles and several exceed 200,000.
Johnson said the division spends about $80,000 per year on maintenance and about $91,000 per year on fuel — about 30,000 gallons annually — and that those figures will feed into CIP and budget discussions. He told the board the division met with a vendor, Enterprise Fleet, for benchmarking and that the in-house mechanics save money compared with outside estimates.
Board members asked whether fuel purchasing is done at the division level; Johnson said the division currently buys fuel separately but noted past bulk purchases and said the facilities committee and supervisors will examine countywide coordination.
Officials recommended continued analysis and said they will return with options for replacement strategies and potential cost-saving measures to support the FY26 budget process.
