Crook County public-works staff briefed the board on an upcoming chip-seal preservation project covering Juniper Canyon and Davis Loop and asked commissioners to be ready to appropriate funds at the next meeting.
Public-works presenter said the county plans to purchase approximately $491,000 of chip-seal material and noted higher oil pricing and distribution costs: "We're asking to purchase around $491,000 with some change in oil at $700 a ton delivered," the presenter said, and staff described distributor rates around $350 per hour with a six-hour minimum for delivery and spreading equipment.
Staff outlined the project limits: the work will start near the County Boat Ramp Road, proceed to Highway 380, and include all of Davis Loop; the plan calls for a double chip seal on the Juniper Canyon hill because of heavier wear there. Staff said quarry rock deliveries were underway and that county crews were performing repair patching in advance. The presenter said the county would rent a roller this year because the neighboring county’s roller is unavailable.
Staff planned a tentative schedule with work beginning June 2 and a hoped-for completion window of about mid-June, weather permitting, and said they will post public notices and use flaggers/temporary traffic control for the duration. The board did not take formal action at the work session; staff said a purchase and appropriation request would be placed on the next regular agenda.
