Chambers County approves $310,598 emergency contract to clear drainage paths east of FM 3180

Chambers County commissioners on May 13 approved an emergency $310,598 contract with Tri County to clear drainage pathways that county staff said are diverting water into neighborhoods east of FM 3180.

County engineer Corey told the court the work continues prior emergency efforts and will direct water to a new crossing and a detention pond being coordinated with the Texas Department of Transportation and Port 99. "This will really be a great improvement, and minimize potential flooding, for hundreds of homes, East Of 31," Corey said.

The county described the work as part of a multi-year effort that will total more than four miles of new or cleared drainage when finished. Commissioners said the immediate project affects roughly 150 homes and about 17.3 acres of drainage area. Staff said parts of the work will be performed by the contractor and some by county crews; the county also will coordinate with TxDOT and obtain necessary tie-ins to state drainage improvements.

Commissioner Todd moved to award the emergency contract; Commissioner Dagley seconded. The court approved the motion by voice vote; the record shows "motion carries." County staff said the award was posted as an emergency and that maintenance plans, including vegetation control, will follow the clearing work.

Court discussion also included operational concerns about future maintenance; one commissioner suggested using aerial spraying to maintain cleared channels and to reduce repeat clearing operations.

Work is scheduled to begin immediately; staff asked that the court recognize the item as an emergency to expedite contracting and coordination with TxDOT.
