Roanoke County Schools staff presented a proposed redistricting plan March 6 that would shift a neighborhood area from Burlington Elementary School to Mountain View Elementary School to balance enrollment and maintain feeder patterns into Northside Middle and Northside High.
Staff said the proposal affects specific streets in the Northside attendance area and is modeled to achieve approximately 90% balanced enrollment between the two elementary schools. Officials said current fourth-grade students who would be moved may request to remain at Burlington; those five students would require written requests for placement and transportation would not be provided for those who remain. Other affected families would have the standard in-county transfer option, which is subject to seat availability and review of attendance, academics and discipline.
Roanoke County Schools said it mailed letters to affected families and invited them to a public meeting on March 11; staff also planned to share feedback to the board before the March 20 meeting and expected to present an action item for board consideration on March 20. Staff emphasized they would handle transfers and records changes centrally so affected families would not need to complete enrollment tasks at the receiving school. Staff said the plan does not affect Title I status and that principals and academic staff reviewed academic capacity calculations.
