Roanoke County Schools staff told the board March 6 that a local business owner has asked to buy a small parcel of school-owned land behind the former Penn Forest Elementary building to provide parking and access for a planned relocation.
Staff described the parcel's location and said the piece is unused by the division except for occasional overflow parking. Presenters said they had discussed the request with the current school building's tenants and the nearby principal and that the community has expressed support. The prospective buyer is Chris's Coffee and Custard, a local small business currently operating in an industrial area of southeast Roanoke.
Board members expressed support at the work session and staff said, assuming consensus, they would place a request to designate the parcel as surplus on the consent agenda at the next regular meeting. If the board designates the parcel surplus, staff said next steps include an appraisal and then separate board action to approve sale terms and price; no sale price was proposed at the March 6 meeting.
