School division reports progress on CTE facility and W.E. Cundiff renovation; board to schedule site visit

Todd Cagle, district staff, told the Roanoke County School Board on May 1 that work at the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) facility and at W.E. Cundiff Elementary is advancing and that the board will be invited to a site visit.
“You can actually see, the building now from Peters Creek Road,” Cagle said, adding that contractors are completing final grade work and have begun concrete masonry unit walls; he said the final set of slabs at the CTE site was expected to be poured within about two weeks.
Cagle said Area D of the CTE project is progressing well and Area A — the entrance and commons — was beginning to have walls. He described slab and steel prep for Area B and said the project has started to rise “vertical,” giving the board a clearer sense of the building’s footprint.
At W.E. Cundiff Elementary, Cagle reported that the division has taken possession of Phase 1A and that construction crews are working on waterproofing and brick installation on the facade. He said the new dining and kitchen areas are “really taking shape” and that the bus loop is at final grade with a base coat of asphalt recently placed; the final surface will be installed later in the schedule.
A board member asked to schedule an additional CTE site visit because they had not attended the first one; Cagle suggested waiting about a week after the slabs are poured so the group can see more visible progress and said he would set that up and invite all members.
Cagle showed interior and exterior photos and described planned possession of Area 1B “at the end of the summer before school starts.” Board members praised the project footage and thanked staff for the work.
No votes or formal actions were recorded for the construction update during the work session; the discussion was presented as an informational update.
