Roanoke County School Board approves annual support contracts and personnel changes to allow contract issuance

The Roanoke County School Board approved the division’s annual support contracts and routine personnel changes at its May 1 work session so the division can issue one-year contracts to non-continuing employees.

“This is normally a consent agenda item, but due to the way the board meetings have fallen this year, I am requesting that we do this on approval item today at the work session,” Jim Bradshaw said. He told the board the support-contract vote is required each year for employees who are not on a continuing contract so the division can issue one-year support contracts for the coming year.

Bradshaw said the contracts are slated to be issued on Friday, May 9, and that the list includes “about a thousand people.” He described the item as a routine administrative action; board members moved and seconded the approval and the roll call produced affirmative responses from board members who spoke during the vote.

The board also discussed that support contracts apply to employees who are not on continuing (teacher) contracts and therefore must be reissued annually. Board members confirmed that approving the item at the work session enables Human Resources to proceed with issuing the one-year contracts on the division’s schedule.

The action was presented as procedural, not policy-making: Bradshaw characterized the personnel changes as routine, and no amendments or substantive debate were recorded beyond clarifying questions about the timing and scope of the contract issuance.

The board did not discuss individual personnel details in the public record during this item.
