School staff seek board approval of 2025–26 Perkins local plan to fund CTE equipment and professional development

Roanoke County Public Schools staff asked the school board to place the district's 2025–26 local Perkins plan on the next meeting consent agenda for approval.
Jason Sir told the board the Perkins V (Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act) funds augment local resources to provide high-level career and technical education programs and are commonly used for equipment — including computers and heavy-equipment simulators — as well as professional development and student travel for Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). The division's Perkins plan was approved by the CTE general advisory committee earlier in the week and the full local plan and budget spreadsheet are available on the board documents site, Sir said.
Board members asked whether the federal funding level is stable; staff replied they expect level funding in the near term but cannot guarantee longer-term federal appropriations. Sir also explained that a modest local contribution listed in the plan (an $8,000 annual contribution) links the plan to the GoTech regional equipment initiative (see discussion in the meeting about GoTech partnerships). The board was told the plan would be added to the consent agenda for next week's meeting for formal approval.
