Board approves most organizational changes but delays approval of renamed equity role after debate

After lengthy discussion about a planned name change for the district’s equity office, the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday approved administrative organizational updates for three positions but delayed final approval of the renamed role until the board reviews the revised job description.

The administration proposed organizational adjustments and a name change for the office now described in meeting materials as Director of Educational Access and Opportunity (a retitling from the division previously identified with equity and diversity). Several board members asked to see the updated job description before approving the revised title and placement on the org chart.

An initial motion to approve the full revised organization chart, including the renamed position, failed in a roll call vote (two in favor, four opposed, one abstention). After discussion, one board member moved to approve the chart for the three positions that had current incumbents or previously authorized descriptions and to delay action on the Director of Educational Access and Opportunity until the board has the new job description. That motion passed on a roll call vote (seven in favor).

Board members said they were acting to preserve transparency and ensure the job’s responsibilities are publicly documented before changing titles. Administration agreed to supply the revised job description and to include it on the agenda for the next meeting (the board’s upcoming special budget session was mentioned as a possible slot for review).
