Mount Pleasant Library wins $20,000 ALA grant; council approves library and housing authority appointments

City staff told the council the Mount Pleasant Public Library received a $20,000 grant from the American Library Association's Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities initiative. The library staff member said the system applied for both $10,000 and $20,000 awards and successfully won the larger grant; staff said the funds will be used for programs to improve accessibility and community services.
Separately, the council approved appointments to several boards. The council appointed Paula Dowell, Helen Thompson and Mary Heron to the library board and approved Charles Adair and Kelly Cooper to the housing authority. The assistant city manager/city secretary announced the names and the council confirmed the appointments by unanimous vote.
Library staff said additional grant applications were pending and that summer events and programs remain scheduled in May.
