Bridgeton council selects navy-blue LED street sign design, citing nighttime visibility

Bridgeton City Council on Feb. 19 voted 8–0 to adopt a navy-blue background with white lettering as the city standard for new LED street signs.
Council members discussed two design options during a special discussion item added to the agenda. Several members said the darker background made street names easier to read at night and would align with the city's blue color scheme. Council member Suttell said she preferred the dark option after seeing examples in other municipalities: "I think I like the blue 1 better." Council member Weshi also said the white-background options appeared "too bright" at night and voiced support for the darker choice.
The motion to adopt the dark blue background for LED signs was made by Council member Luther and seconded by Council member Suttel; the council then conducted a roll-call vote and recorded an 8–0 approval.
Why it matters: the selected color and contrast will be used for new LED street signs installed around the city. Council members said readability at night, consistency with the municipal brand and minimizing glare for drivers were key considerations. Staff said the vendor had recommended the darker option for nighttime legibility and that representatives had provided sample renderings.
Next steps: Council asked staff to proceed with the chosen design and incorporate it into upcoming sign orders and installations.
