Police chaplain honored; city introduces new chaplain following retirement

The Bridgeton Police Department recognized longtime chaplain Cathy Nordgarten and introduced Deacon Scott Kaufman as a new chaplain during the April 2 city council meeting.
Police Chief Masadi said the department’s chaplain program, started in spring 2023, provides wellness support for officers and on‑call assistance for families after tragic events. The chief presented a plaque to Nordgarten in recognition of her service and noted she has offered to assist the department on an as‑needed basis despite stepping down.
Scott Kaufman, introduced by Chief Masadi, was approved by the department’s interview panel on March 4, 2025, and will serve as a chaplain while continuing other community roles. Kaufman said he looks forward to serving Bridgeton residents and supporting officers.
The council heard the introductions during staff reports; no formal council action was required.
