Bridgeton council accepts April election results, administers oaths to newly elected officials and municipal judge

The Bridgeton City Council on Wednesday in May unanimously accepted the results of the April 2025 municipal election and administered oaths of office to newly elected council members and Municipal Judge Joe LaRue.
Council members voted 7-0 to accept the election results after a motion by Council Member Kathy Luther and a second by Council Member Gretchen Luke. Clerk Downs called the roll for the recorded vote: “Aye” votes were recorded from Council Members Kathy Iwanu, Gretchen Luke, Kathy Luther, Joni Norris, Patel, Suttell and Weshi. The motion passed by a vote of 7 to nothing.
The acceptance of the election results cleared the way for the installation of the newly elected and reelected officials. The council then swore in council members and the municipal judge. Steven Washington took the oath for Ward 1, saying, “I, Steven Washington, do solemnly swear,” as the oath was administered. Kathy Iwanu was sworn for Ward 2. Kathy Luther was sworn for a three-year term for Ward 3. Joni Norris was sworn for Ward 4, stating, “I, Joni Norris, do solemnly swear,” during the oath. Municipal Judge Joe LaRue also took the oath: “I, Joe LaRue, do solemnly swear.”
During the meeting the mayor or presiding officer noted that Judge LaRue told the council this evening that this was his 20th swearing-in and that he will reach the Missouri statutory mandatory retirement age before the end of his current two-year term. The council thanked LaRue for his years of service.
Other business at the special meeting included approval of the meeting agenda by motion of Council Member Luther, seconded by Luke, and a motion to adjourn moved by Luther and seconded by Patel. The council invited attendees to join refreshments in the lobby after the meeting.
The oaths administered included language committing the officials to support the constitutions of the United States and the state of Missouri and to uphold the laws and ordinances governing the city of Bridgeton, St. Louis County, Missouri.
