Council approves emergency sewer repairs invoice after downtown backups

The Mexico City Council on April 14 approved payment of a $10,875 invoice to Plan B Development for emergency repairs to the sanitary sewer collection system in the 500 block of South Jefferson Street.
City staff told the council the sewer line experienced two backups; one residence was affected. Staff said investigation found settling of a section of line that restricted flow and allowed solids, fats, oils and grease to obstruct the pipe. An existing clean-out in the area limited the ability to service the line, so the city contracted emergency work with Plan B Development over a weekend to respond, install a new manhole and prevent further backups.
During the work staff discovered an additional downstream manhole in poor condition; Plan B also installed a second manhole to address that issue. The council heard that the repairs have mitigated the immediate issue but that a larger section of line may need full replacement, which could exceed $10,000 and return to council for approval as required by purchasing policy.
The council approved the invoice by roll-call vote.
Staff said the project revealed a section of sewer line that remains a high priority for maintenance and may be budgeted for replacement later in the year or included in next year's budget.
