Mexico, Missouri, council certifies election, administers oath and elects mayor, pro tem

The Mexico City Council on April 14 accepted the certified results of the April 8 municipal election, administered an oath of office to a newly elected council member and elected Steve Hagan mayor and Chris Miller chairman pro tem.

Council adopted a motion to accept the election certification presented as the certified results from Lisa Smith of Audrain County for ballots cast on April 8, 2025. Following certification, the council administered the oath of office to the newly elected member and proceeded to conduct internal elections for mayor and chairman pro tem under the council's adopted election rules.

The council opened nominations for mayor and nominated Steve Hagan. After the roll-call vote, the council elected Hagan mayor. The council then nominated Chris Miller for chairman pro tem and elected him to that position.

The council discussed and temporarily repealed a prior policy limiting mayoral service to two consecutive one-year terms before conducting the election. The meeting included routine roll calls to close nominations and to approve each election by the stated voting rules. No additional amendments to the election rules were offered during the meeting.

The actions follow standard municipal procedures: the council accepted the county's certification of ballots, administered the oath of office to an incoming member, and filled leadership positions by nomination and roll-call vote.

Council members and staff thanked outgoing and incoming members and briefly recognized staff contributions during the meeting.
